Being part of the lovable people of Max's is really great and it was very memorable for me. I applied at Max's through online so I was surprised that it only took me one day waiting for their confirmation if I'm hired or not but thanks God- it's positive. 🙂 Specifically, I applied for CSA (Customer Sevice Attendant) for I know that it could really improve me as a person and of course, to improve my skill and knowledge as an HRM student.On the first day, Mam Rizza who is our good and patient trainer taught a small background/ history of Max's Restaurant. We learned that it started since 1945when Maximo Gimenez Gimenez decided to open a cafe which served chicken, steak, and drinks. He was joined by his wife Mercedes, sister-in-law Felipa Serrano Sanvictores, his niece Ruby who managed the kitchen, and her husband Claro. Aft er that, they were encouraged to expand the menu and serve more Filipino food. Max's Restaurant bills itself as â€Å"The house that fried chicken built†.Max's Restaurant currently has over 127 branches in the Philippines and has opened branches internationnally. After the first orientation, we're on the second part which is the Menu Familiarization which is quite difficult for those who are not good in memorization. Honestly, at first, I got confused with the product codes and descriptions of every food item but thanks to Mam Rizza for being knowledgeable and proactive teacher to us. After this, she also taught the different wares used for soups/ salads, main course, side dishes, desserts and beverage glasses.After discussion, Mam Rizza gave us many activities (by group) to promote friendship and camaraderie among us. So, its so really nice because all of us feel that we are one big family. After this, Mam Rizza gave us our long quiz for the preparation on the actual examina tion. Finally, I passed the examination. 🙂 The third part of the orientation is all about the Dining Training Program which is also the last part of our orientation program. This program composed of 2 parts. First part was all about the service quality, customer needs, etiquettes, do's ; don'ts and rewards of excellent service.To summarize, this is more on the service quality and the etiquettes of a service personnel. We have learned the different principles and rules followed at Max's. Mam Rizza discussed to us the customer's need for us to understand who are the guests? and what are their needs as a guest? Next is the 7 deadly sins that pertains to things or actions to avoid while on duty and last is the rewards of excellent service. Overall, Mam Rizza gave us the motivation for us to be a lovable people of Max's by giving our excellent and â€Å"TODO BIGAY SERVICE† to all the guests.Additionally, Mam Rizza always reminds us that GOOD ATTITUDE AND CHARACTER IS A MU ST! Second part was all about the â€Å"Sectionalization† which implies the knowing and understanding the responsibilities of each service personnel (greeter, seater/rover, ordertaker, waiter and servers). We learned the first rule: â€Å"No guest is left unattended and all stations are manned at all times. † The dining sequence composed of 7 parts. Starting from the greeting the guests, leading them to their tables, presenting menu and removing extra settings.These first 4 actions should be done with a big smile and care making the guests feel that they are welcome and at home. Next will be the order taking, suggestive selling, repeating orders and punching orders. On this stage, presence of mind is really needed because you have to entertain all the questions of the guests and you have to get the orders of the guests correctly that's why repeating orders is very important. Same on the first stage, a big smile and care for every guest. Ooopsss†¦ Don't forget to t ake the name of the guest and introduce yourself to them.The third stage includes the serving of food and drinks. The fourth step includes the first check back, (done to check the satisfaction of guests by asking how is the food? ), suggestive selling for desserts or coffee and partial bussing. Fifth step includes the presenting the bill if it is asked by the guest. This should be done politely with a smile. After receiving payment, sixth step include the presenting of change and saying â€Å"Thank you for dining Sir/ Mam†. The last step (7th) includes thanking the guests and inviting them again to come again. Part of the 7 sequence is the time standards.These time standards are the preparation time for each food item. It's very important to know this to inform the guests if how longer they will wait for their food. For salads/ soups and side orders (5 mins. ); ruby's favorites (15 mins. ); fried chicken (20 mins. ) rice/ drinks except fruit shakes (3 mins), combo meals (10 m ins. ) and desserts (5-10 mins. ). Lastly, we discussed the suggested script for the guests while communicating with but the most important is the four magic words: Excuse me, Thank you, My pleasure and Certainly Mam/ Sir. November 26, 2012- first day of my duty at Max's Restaurant, Quezon Avenue. My supervisors (Sir Jon and Sir Tom) gave me a short review about the table set- up and seat numbering (1 o'clock position). They also taught me the three function rooms they have- Claro, Ruby and Maximo Hall. But before that, I met my co- CSA's who I considered as my Kuya and Ate. On my first week, I am the greeter. As a greeter, I have to be a person who always smiles, having a welcoming spirit.At first, it seems that it's the easiest responsibility of a CSA. Yeah, it is true but sometimes cru cial when there are no CSA at the stations who will assist the guests. If that so, I have to quickly assist them to their preferred tables and go back again to the doors as fast as I can to accommodate the next guests who will enter at the door. As time goes by, it became my lifestyle whenever I saw people, I learned to smile and greet them politely. I also learned how to socialize with different types of persons. On my second week, I was assigned at station 3 (tables 21-24).At first, I am excited but the tension was really there. I did some mistakes such as not repeating orders clearly to the guests, wrong orders, forgot to suggest soups/ salads and carelessness the way I serve food/ drinks. These are my common mistakes during my first days. But of course, on the next two weeks, I saw myself improving even though sometimes, there are little mistakes, I developed my problem-solving skills and the presence of mind was really there. Thanks God for guiding me and of course to my superv isors who always corrects me if there is something wrong.As time goes on, I really learned to socialize with my co-CSA's (Ate Rox, Ate Rose, Ate Berna, Ate Tessa (BSA), Ate Aeinah (BSA), Ate Ching, Ate Marga, Ate Sherly, Ate Shelou and Ate Bridgette). I will never forget them because they are the one who helped me and encouraged me to finish my training. 🙂 One thing I've learned is to mingle with them even though they had different attitudes and personalities. The most memorable moment during my training period is the personal visitation of my beloved instructors (Mam She and Sir Chris). I was greatly impressed with them as my coordinators because they have the time to visit us.My instructors surprised with my physical appearance (wearing my black dress uniform at Max's) and they said to me: â€Å"Babae ka na pala! † 🙂 The OJT program I had at Max's Restaurant is really good and memorable to me. I learned many things form my work and co-staffs. In John Locke’s works on the topic of political philosophy, he introduced his ideas on the subjects of natural rights and the social contract. Locke’s ideas on these subjects have been largely influential in the development of the foundation of modern government. One of John Lockes most influential ideas was the thought that everyone had specific natural rights. In his opinion, there are certain natural rights that every person is entitled to have. According to Locke, these include the rights to life, liberty, and property. He developed these ideas in his most renowned piece of literary work called Second Treatise Concerning Civil Government. In this document, Locke writes that people should give up some natural freedoms in order to cooperate with the common law, and in return, the government should protect them. This idea of social contract was also talked about in Second Treatise Concerning Civil Government. Many writers who read Locke’s ideas on natural laws and social contract became influenced by him and his ideas, most notably Thomas Jefferson in the American Declaration of Independence. Locke’s Second Treatise Concerning Civil Government can be seen as somewhat of an outline for the Declaration of Independence. An example of this in the Declaration is when it states that every man has a right to â€Å"life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. † This almost directly references Lockes ideas in Second Treatise Concerning Civil Government where he states every man has a right to defend their life, health, Liberty, or possessions. Also, the first sentence of the Declaration establishes a Natural Law based on a theory popularized by Locke. John Locke was and continues to be a huge contributor to modern governments. It Is a Constant Image of Your Face Essay Dennis Vincent Brutus was a South African activist, educator, journalist and poet best known for his campaign to have apartheid South Africa banned from the Olympic Games. He lived between 28th November 1924 and 26th December 2009. He was born in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and had ancestry of mixed French, Italian and South African. His activist life likens him to a crusader for his country. A knight on duty for a mistress; and this has so often appeared in his poetry. He loved South Africa deeply and did everything to win its freedom. In this poem, â€Å"It Is the Constant Image of Your Face†, he closes the first stanza by saying â€Å"my land takes precedence of all my loves†. This was his passion. While he was in prison, news broke that South Africa had been banned from the 1964 Tokyo Olympics as he had campaigned for. First Thoughts on the Poem In this poem, the poet experiences a deep feeling of guilt and remorse. The poet has framed an image of his beloved whose face is constantly before him, while he is engrossed in a world of his own; a world in which thoughts are like knives, hurling accusations at him. These accusations cut deeply into the poet’s consciousness and remind him of his treachery to his native country. Apparently, the poet has left his native home, having been captivated by the beauty and assurances of his beloved. However, deep in his heart he knows that no other love can lay claim to his loyalty but his homeland which is above all other loves. Feelings of remorse and guilt plague the thoughts of the poet. To him, leaving his country is like an act of treason and treachery. Although he prizes his beloved, he pleads for forgiveness from his country whose tenderness matches or surpasses that of the beloved. Second Thoughts on the Poem This poem is a typical Dennis Brutus poem. As is characteristic, he compares his love for South Africa, to the love he has for some other person. Maybe, a woman! He opens the poem by saying ‘the constant image’ (line 1) of his woman’s face and the ‘grave attention’ (line 3) of her eyes which survey him amid his ‘world of knives’ (line 4), accuse him perennially. This is all coming to him as a memory because in line 2, he makes the allusion to a period gone when his love was knelt before him with the frame of her face in his hands. His ‘world of knives’ can mean so many things at once. It could mean that Brutus was surrounded by apartheid South Africa with its numerous brutalities. It could also mean that he was conflicted inside him, in a way that struck him like many knives piercing at once. Again, he could be talking about the conflict between his two loves as the poem tells us as we read on. And we are yet to know what she accuses him for, but Brutus doesn’t make us wonder long. She accuses him of heart’s-treachery (line 6). No, not even accuses but convicts! He has accepted that he has been treacherous to his woman, going on to probably share his love with another. But he does not apologise for it. He tells her that none of the two of them can ‘plead excuses’ (line 7) for his seeming infidelity because apparently, he cannot stop his love for his land and she can also ‘claim no loyalty’ (line 8). I want to risk saying that he is saying that he’s not bound to be loyal to her because ‘my land takes precedence of all my loves’ (line 9). He loves his land more than all his other loves. His land is his woman’s rival. The second stanza is an attempt to pacify the heart of his woman who has been brought to the saddening realisation that she cannot have her lover all to herself. He begs mitigation (line 10), meaning that he admits that he has done wrong but is ready to give reasons for it. He calls her lover an ‘accomplice of my heart’ (line 11). That is like saying that she is equally guilty of his betrayal of his greater love. The woman is so beautiful that she has blackmailed him with her beauty (line 12) and made him a backslidden lover when it comes to his land. He has given his heart to another one outside his precedent love. In fact, her love for him has been so sweet and protective that he finds no shame in confessing his denial of his country. He calls it a ‘still-fresh treason’ (line 15). But in this confused place, a world of knives, he pleads, hopes (line 16) that his dearest love (line 16), South Africa, will pardon him freely (line 17) and not blame his woman. He ends by revealing more of his confusion, saying that South Africa, his first love, is his woman’s ‘mistress (or your match)’ (line 18), not knowing which to say is more tender. He loves one, he loves the other. One was able to conspire with his heart and steal his affection from the other, and now he does not even know whether the two are matched or one is dearer to his heart. The greater emotion here is Brutus’ guilt of diluting the apartheid struggle with other cares. His love of his land is shown here overwhelmingly. This poem is another beauty that has added a little more tonnage to my love for this most romantic of poets coming from Africa.

Equity in Oral Health Care Health equity is based mainly on logic and moral values. It is defined as differences in health that are unnecessary, avoidable, unfair and unjust The Baylor Health Care System has highlighted six aims with the acronym STEEEP to increase the quality of health care delivered. These are Safety, Timeliness, Effectiveness, Efficiency, Equity and Patient-centeredness. Of these, equity is one aspect which has received less priority(1). Health equity should not be mistaken with health inequality though both words have sometimes been used interchangeably. Inequality can be expressed in quantitative terms while equity is explained in terms of moral values and is more of an ethical principle because every individual has the right to health. A more operational definition of health equity is the absence of systematic disparities in health (or its social determinants) between more and less advantaged social groups. Why oral health demands equity Oral health enables a person to perform some basic functions like eating, speaking and socializing. It is widely known that mouth is regarded as the mirror of the human body because oral health is so closely relate to systemic health. Poor oral health and presence of oral diseases indirectly affects quality of life due to the pain experienced and the inability to perform day-to-day activities. It also leads to loss of man hours thereby leading to a decrease in earning and productivity. But it is still unknown to large segments of the population that oral diseases are to a great extent preventable and can be adequately treated if diagnosed early and thus oral health inequity is largely avoidable. Equity in health care depends mainly on the health care system existing in the country. Before we go into oral health â€Å"inequity† in India, let’s first consider oral health care infrastructure in India. Oral health care in India is delivered by the following methods Government organizations Government Dental Colleges Government Medical Colleges and Dental Wing District Hospitals with Dental Unit Community Health Centers Primary Health Centers. Non.governmental organizations Private Dental Colleges Private Medical Colleges with Dental Wing Corporate Hospitals with Dental Units. Private practitioners Private dental practitioners Private dental hospitals Private medical hospitals with dental units. Indigenous systems Ayurveda Siddha Unani Homeopathy(2) To elaborate, oral health care delivery in India starts at the grass root levels with community health workers and anganwadi workers who are trained in providing basic oral health awareness to the people of rural areas. Then, there is the sub-centres in rural areas which is equipped with a rural health care practitioner, midwifes and health workers. Next in line comes the Primary Health Centres (PHC) which has a dentist among other health care professionals. The next referral unit is the Community Health Centers (CHC) which is also equipped with a dentist. The higher center is Sub-district hospitals or taluk hospitals which are supposed to have specialist dentists also. This is followed by oral care given in district hospitals and dental colleges. This is the hierarchy seen in public health sector. In India, oral care is majorly delivered by private sector institutions which include solo/individual clinics, group practice, corporate/chain of dental clinic and private dental colleges. Reports say that more than 90% of oral care is delivered by this sector. Dentistry is also practiced in indigenous systems of medicines like Ayurveda, homeopathy, unani and siddha. To give a full picture of the oral care delivery systems in India, the mention of dental treatments given by unregistered dentists, quacks and street dentists also need to be done. Though no data is available, there is still a large number of people seeking oral care from these setups. In order to achieve equity in any type of health and health care, researchers have identified three major principles. They are: Equal access to health care for those who have equal needs Equal utilization of health care for those who have equal needs And, equal (or rather equitable) health outcomes (3) From the oral health point of view, let us examine these principles related to the Indian context. Equal access to health care for those who have equal needs Dental diseases are a significant burden in India with dental caries affecting 60-65% and periodontal disease affecting around 50-90% of the general population depending on age(4). Due to the high prevalence of these two conditions, the World Health Organization has considered them as global burdens. So the need for dental care is obvious. Access to health care is one of the primary requisites to achieve equity in health. Based on this principle, let’s examine the scenario in India. India has about 290 dental colleges with around 24,000 graduates passing out every year. According to the Dental Council of India, the number of dentists registered with the central/state dental council until the year 2012 stood at 120897. The number of dental surgeons serving in the government health centres in the year 2013 was about 5278 who covered an average population of 231827 persons per dental surgeon(5). Even with so many graduates coming out every year, basic oral care facilities are sti ll not available to a large section of the Indian population especially in the rural areas. This shows the wide disparity in delivery of oral health. Though India has substantially increased the health care facilities through various five-year plans, it is still inadequate considering the growth of private sector in health care. From a meager 8% in 1949, the private sector now contributes to 93% of hospitals and 85% of doctors in the country(6). Though this data shows an increase in health care availability in India, the question that remains to be answered is whether this mushrooming of private sectors addressed the health inequity issues. It is obvious that private health care facilities are concentrated mainly in urban areas catering to the needs of people enjoying a high socio-economic status. As a result of this, cost of health care has also gone up making it virtually impossible for people belonging low socio-economic status to afford health care. This is what we call the urban-rural divide. The same scenario exists for dental care which is generally perceived as ‘expensive’ by the common man. The exponential gr owth of private dental institutions in the country was seen as a boon which could ensure availability of basic dental care to all sections of the society. But sadly, present statistics don’t reflect the same view. It is seen that almost 62% of dental surgeons are registered and serving with dental councils of the high Human Resource for Health (HRH) production states (viz. Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Puducherry). Moreover, these states also have shown a profound increase in private dental colleges which are situated in and around urban and semi-urban areas. The dentist population ratio is the yard stick used to measure the availability of dental care to the people. The World Health Organization recommends a dentist population ratio of about 1:7500. In the present scenario in India, this ratio stands at 1:12,500(7). Though this information points towards a need for increase in dentist, a closer look at the reality brings out a different story. This is because, as mentioned earlier, the distribution of dentists is typically skewed which in effect brings this ratio to 1:9000 in urban areas and an alarming 1:2,00,000 in rural areas(8). This roughly states that around 80% of the dentists work in urban areas while 70% of India’s population live in rural areas(9). Reading further into these statistics we can make out that this ratio also doesn’t provide the actual picture. This ratio is calculated based on the number of dentists registered in the respective state councils which is actually a cumulative data. There could be severa l retired or expired dentists and non-practicing dentists, if excluded, could still worsen the situation. This by far, is the most important aspect of the inequity in oral health care the country faces. Equal utilization of health care for those who have equal needs Utilization of health care is a complex phenomenon and multifaceted human behavior. The determinants of oral health care can be classified as predisposing (socio-demographic factors like age, sex, occupation, and social network), enabling (transportation, income, and information), and need (perceived health or professionally assessed illness) factors(10). Though by service approach (camps and outreach programs), oral health care is provided to the people, the effective utilization of the same remains a question. The social component of oral diseases has been a major factor in this regard. If we have a comprehensive look at the admission rates at various levels of oral health care establishments, the above said factors like socio-demographic variables, access and most importantly the perceived need for oral care play a pivotal role. Let’s begin by looking at the various types of treatments provided by the oral health care establishments in the country. The posting of a dentist only begins from the level of Community Health Center. The sub-centers and Primary Health Centers who cater to about 3000 – 5000 and 20,000 – 50,000 of the population do not have a government appointed dentist in their ranks. Though some private educational institutions have adopted some PHC’s as a part of their community outreach programs, the coverage is still very deficient. A study conducted in Mangalore, Karnataka supports this fact where only 4 out of 21 PHC’s (19%) offered dental services and were managed by private dentists from nearby dental colleges(11). In a developing country like India where dental diseases are more prevalent in rural areas than the urban setting, the unavailability of dental care in sub-centers and PHC’s is in itself the biggest drawback in health care system of India . Without availability, the question of utilization does not arise or is insignificant. The 2012 Guidelines for Community Health Centers provided by the Government of India necessitates that each CHC be equipped with one dentist and a dental auxiliary(12). Sadly, even this basic requirement remains unfulfilled in most states across India. Thus, a population of 80,000 to 1,20,000 which a CHC is supposed to cover lack in oral care. Moreover, the sanctioned dentist in a CHC is with a qualification of a bachelor’s degree (BDS) thereby also causing a deficiency in specialist care. Though it is mentioned in the guidelines that treatments offered in CHC’s range from normal fillings, extractions, emergency care and root canal treatments; the absence of dental chair making it impossible to do treatments other than extractions and simple fillings. It can thus be deduced that very minimal treatment if at all; or only primary level of oral care can be provided by these centers. The situation looks slightly better in the secondary referral center which is the taluk and district hospitals. The Government of India prescribed guidelines state that dental services that can be availed form a district hospital include fillings, extractions, scaling and periodontal therapy, minor surgeries like impaction, orthodontic treatment, prosthetic rehabilitations and treatment of neoplasm(13). But the availability of these services only from the level of district hospital and above brings to the forefront one of the most important barrier in the utilization of health care; access. A study conducted in Virajpet, concluded that transport to the dentist was difficult which was regarded as a major barrier in the utilization of dental care. Secondary and tertiary level dental care available in the government set up is from dental colleges established by the Government. These colleges are markedly low in number (two colleges on an average in per state) compared to private institutions which makes it very difficult for people of low socio-economic class to avail specialist care. The makes people approach private dental care establishments like clinics, corporate/chain of clinics and private dental colleges for treatment. The fact that needs to be emphasized here that though all levels of dental care is available in these institutions, the affordability of this care stands a barrier for utilization of these services since they depend on out-of-pocket payment. The class of people utilizing this facility to get dental treatment thus gets restricted to people living with a high socio-economic status. Utilization of dental care does not end with the presence/absence of dental care facilities alone. As mentioned earlier, dental diseases have a social angle to it. One of the reasons for not utilizing dental care is the priority oral care has in people’s lives. Several studies have reported that people considered dental care was not important (2)(14). Parental ignorance about the importance of oral health leads to the presence of oral diseases like dental caries in a vast majority of children. Other studies have revealed that level of education and financial status also affect utilization of dental services. Not surprisingly, the introduction of family planning to African countries such as Nigeria started out slowly. I would also like to be a coach since I have been in sports since middle school. The nature of each student is different. There are no two students the same and therefore, you have to teach each as an individual. Some students will catch on to a concept easily, while another student will have trouble. Some students are in school to get an education and do wellfor themselves, while others are in school because it's the law they have to attend until they are16 years old. The students that want to be in school will not cause as much trouble as the onesthat are there because they have to be there. Some students will always have their homework, while others won't do it at all. Some students need to know that someone cares about them enough to "push" them to do better. Many students today experience some type of family problem that they bring to school with them. The purpose of public education is to prepare students for the rest of their life.
